Affiliated with the Angling TrustThese 94 unique trophies (of which 34 are missing) have been donated to the Deal & Walmer Angling Association by past and present members and are held in trust by the Association which, as custodian, may not sell or otherwise dispose thereof even by a proposition passed at an A.G.M. The trophies represent the ambitions, application and achievements of four generations of local sea anglers spanning 118 years and the Association, through its committee, is entrusted to ensure their survival for future generations of Deal and Walmer sea anglers.

52 (1.67) (cup)[1] Grish Chunder Dutt & Sons were one of the best and most prolific silversmithing concerns working in Bhowanipore, a suburb of Calcutta, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Wynyard Wilkinson has suggested that Calcutta's rural theme may have developed as a response to the various international exhibitons being organised in India in the late 19th century. The Calcutta International Exhibition of 1883 saw silver arriving from various regions of India, each with its own distinctive character. The demand thus far had been exclusively for European form and decoration. Silversmiths working in Calcutta and Bhowanipore strongly felt the need to develop a new and distinctive local style. This new form of decoration manifested itself in the form of depictions of the local religious tradition and Bengal village life. For further information on the Bhowanipore silversmithing tradition, see W. Wilkinson, Indian Silver 1858-1947 (London 1999) pages 55-57.
[2] Margery Sitwell Tope Cup
Inscribed "The Margery Sitwell Challenge Cup, Deal & Walmer Angling Association", made of Sterling silver in 1806 (London - L) by Peter (1740-1825) and William (1774-1850) Bateman (P B W B) of Bunhill Row, St. Luke's, Old Street, London.
- H230 mm x W200 mm
- 714 g (base and cup)
- 410 g (13.18 Troy) (cup only)
Hester Bateman (1708 - 16 September 1794) was an English silversmith who successfully ran her family business for thirty years following the death of her husband. She was succeeded in turn by her sons, daughter-in-law, grandson and great-grandson and the Bateman family silversmithing company lasted until the middle of the nineteenth century.
Peter Bateman retired in 1815 and passed the company to his nephew William, son of Jonathan and Ann Bateman. His son, also called William Bateman, took over in 1839 until 1843 when the Bateman family company closed. Bateman silverware continues to be popular, and Hester Bateman is considered one of the finest English silversmiths.
